Fun Things to Do in Tempe, AZ
Tempe is a fashionable Phoenix suburb. Due to the Arizona State University campus, this city is a trendy and flourishing location. The city is widely acknowledged as the region’s intellectual hub and beckons visitors with its cultured, sophisticated atmosphere. Thanks to the large student population, this is also the place to enjoy a spectacular live music scene and diverse, vibrant nightlife. Tempe is located adjacent to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Mesa.
The city provides a variety of convenient, free public transit methods. It is also quite compact and relatively easy to explore on foot. Public transportation is available at several points throughout urban neighborhoods and the downtown district, connecting to the Metro hub. The University also sponsors several trams operating within and outside the University campus.
Tempe is known as a bicycle-friendly city. Bike lanes are provided alongside most roads, and several enchanting bike paths connect the city’s highlights, wandering through parks and among public areas. To rent a bicycle, check out the Urban Commuter bike shop near the downtown Metro station.
A progressive, youthful attitude radiates from the University campus. This is the largest campus of the largest University in the nation. The campus itself is worth exploring. A number of excellent free museums are situated among desert and tropical species of exotic trees and other plants. The Life Sciences Building is home to a countless number of reptile species, and several poisonous snakes steal the show. The Fine Arts Center features the University Art Museum’s outstanding collection, and hosts a unique artist residence program. The world-renowned School of Human Evolution and Social Change can be found inside the Anthropology Building.
The Hayden Library is a unique underground structure housed at the central campus area. The interesting collection is composed of several rare works, including authentic Gutenberg Bible pages. For international music events, Broadway shows, and local favorites, head to the Gammage Auditorium. The Auditorium is a University tradition and was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Families with children often enjoy the Mars Space Flight Facility featuring the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft.
For off-campus fun, Tempe Town Lake is a unique, expansive urban park complex with golf, soccer, and swimming options. Town Lake Marina, Splash Playground, and Tempe Beach Park are popular spots here and are all connected by scenic walking paths. The Ford Ironman and several other triathlon events take place at the lake throughout the year.
