Turn back the clock – Portland culture and the Christensens by James Bash
by James Bash on January 18, 2010
Dana Carlile is one of those rare birds who knows a lot about Portland early cultural history. Carlile, a self-described amateur history buff, set out to find a photo of his mother. The trail of breadcrumbs led to the story of Mose Christensen, one of the most influential founders of the Oregon Symphony (which used to be called the Portland Symphony), and to Bill Christensen, who founded the San Francisco Ballet, America’s first classical ballet company.
Carlile will present the story of Mose and Bill Christensen, as well as several other Christensens this Sunday, January 24, at 3 pm at the Central Library. Carlile will give a slide show called “The Impresarios: Denmark to Oregon.” It has all sorts of fascinating photos of Portland’s cultural life. The presentation is free and will include a video presentation of Ken Verdoia’s 1987 interview with Bill Christensen.
I met Carlile near his home in Northwest Portland, and the following conversation will give you a glimpse into his research and presentation.
What started you down this path into historical research?
Carlile: I didn’t know anything about my grandfather, Ferdinand Sorenson, so I began with him. He had this terrific collection of photographs and memorabilia that touched on his career as a musician and as a dance teacher here in Portland. When I tried to find out more about him in Utah, where he had spent some time before coming to Portland, I ran into this stuff about Mose Christensen. It turns out that Mose employed my grandfather as a dance teacher and as a musician in Boise and then in Portland. That’s how I found out how interesting Mose was.
My research on Mose led to his father Lars, who also had a very interesting life, and also to Lars’s nephew Bill Christensen, the dancer and choreographer who lived in Portland before moving to San Francisco where he founded the San Francisco Ballet and later the Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah.
